We look forward to meeting you!

Welcome to St. Michael and All Angels' Church, Helensburgh!

Our church belongs to The Diocese of Glasgow & Galloway, in the Scottish Episcopal Church. The Scottish Episcopal Church is a member of the world-wide Anglican Communion, and is called 'Episcopal' because it was the part of the Protestant churches in Scotland which wished to retain the leadership of bishops. There are 7 dioceses in the Episcopal Church, each under the care of a bishop, and one of the bishops is elected as 'Primus' (the equivalent of the Archbishop of Canterbury); the present holder of this title is Idris Jones, the Bishop of this diocese.

St. Michael's Church was built and consecrated in 1868, the second church on the site. The building was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. The church contains what is said to be one of the finest collections of stained-glass windows in Scotland. There are 2 guide-books available in church which will tell you more about the building and the windows.

The parish of St. Michael's covers the area stretching from Cardross and Arden northwards to Arrochar and Tarbet, and also the Rosneath Peninsula.

St. Michael's has a worshipping congregation of about 130. We offer 3 services on a Sunday - Said Eucharist (Prayer Book rite) at 08h00, Family Eucharist at 10h15, and Choral Prayer Book Evensong at the traditional Anglican time of 18.h30! There are mid-week eucharists on Tuesday at 10h30 and Wednesday at 19h30. Prayer meetings are held at each week at 10h30 on a Thursday and 07h30 on a Saturday.

St. Michael's is still able to assemble an adult choir (to which new members are always welcome!) There are also a variety of church groups which meet regularly and cater for a variety of interests. You will find details of all these activities in the monthly magazine 'The Messenger', which is distributed free-of-charge!

St. Michael's takes seriously its mission to witness to the Christian faith as effectively as possible. All comers are welcome to our worship. Children and young people are catered for with Sunday Clubs at the 10h15 Eucharist, and in a Youth Group on Sunday evening. The youth leaders also encourage participation in some of the activities for young adults organised by other churches in the town. Enquiries about celebrating baptism, confirmation, and marriage, in the church are welcome. The Rector is always sympathetic to requests to conduct funerals, even if the person concerned is not a member of either St. Michael's or the Episcopal Church. St. Michael's Church also has close links with the Royal Navy Chaplaincy Team at Faslane Naval Base.

The people of St. Michael's take part in ecumenical events organised in Helensburgh. The church is a very active member of the local Christian Aid group. Members also are involved in a wide variety of secular activities in the town and district.

We hope that you would like to worship with us regularly. If you would like to be included in the Congregational Roll, please ask for a yellow card, and return it to The Rector when it is complete: you will then also be put in contact with the Treasurer and the Stewardship Convenor. We look forward to getting to know you, and hope that you will be happy as a member of St. Michael & All Angels.

The Rector is David Cook, tel. 672500.

The Lay Reader is Peter Higson, tel. 672750.
