INTROIT HYMN 288 Hark, the glad sound!

COLLECT

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you: look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and give to us the peace and unity of your kingdom, where you live and reign with the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.

OLD TESTAMENT READING

Zephaniah 3. 16 – 20

A Song of Joy

On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord.

PSALM – Psalm 133
R. The Lord’s blessing is life for ever.

Behold how good and pleasant it is to dwell together in unity. R

It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard, R

Even on Aaron’s beard, running down upon the collar of his clothing. R

It is like the dew of Hermon running down upon the hills of Zion. For there the Lord has promised his blessing: even life for evermore. R

EPISTLE

1 John 4. 9 – 15
God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Saviour of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God.

GRADUAL HYMN 362 Inspired by love and anger

GOSPEL

John 17. 11b – 23
Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed: “I am no longer in the world, but those whom you gave me are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth. I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
