INTROIT HYMN 510 Morning has broken

COLLECT

O God, who called your servant Columba from among the princes of Ireland to be a herald and evangelist of your kingdom: grant that your Church, remembering his faith and courage, may so proclaim the gospel, that people everywhere will come to know your Son as their Saviour, and serve him as their king; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.

OLD TESTAMENT READING

Isaiah 61. 1-3

The Good News of Deliverance

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.

PSALM – Psalm 34. 1-8
R. O taste and see, O taste and see that the Lord is gracious.

I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall ever be in my mouth. My soul shall glory in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. R

O magnify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. R

Look upon him and be radiant and your faces shall not be ashamed. This poor soul cried, and the Lord heard me and saved me from all my troubles. R

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is gracious; blessed is the one who trusts in him. R

EPISTLE

1 Thessalonians 2. 2-12
We had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us. You remember our labour and toil, brothers and sisters; we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how pure, upright, and blameless our conduct was towards you believers. As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a father with his children, urging and encouraging you and pleading that you should lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

GRADUAL HYMN 715 (Omit vv3,4) The King of love my shepherd is

GOSPEL

Matthew 5. 13-16

Salt and Light

Jesus said to the crowd: ‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled underfoot. ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp-stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

OFFERTORY HYMN 323 I am the bread of life

COMMUNION HYMN 6 Abide with me

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Holy Father, who gathered us here around the table of your Son: in that new world where you reveal the fullness of your peace, gather people of every race and language to share with Columba and all your saints in the eternal banquet of Jesus Christ our Lord.
